Construction of a large Angel Mountain Gothic Castle began in the second half of the 14th century. The castle was founded by Hrabišic from Rýzmburk. The first written mention comes from 1402.

During the Hussite Wars the castle seize Jakoubek from Vřesovice. The castle was created to bastion of utraquists. The castle had to be repaired because of conquest in 1437.

In the second half of the 15th century the castle was rebuilt to late Gothic style and there was also founded town.

During the Thirty Years War  in 1635 the castle was conquered by Swedes and it was plundered and destroyed. Than was maintained only in emergency. In 1718 the castle burned down and was finally abandoned.

It was favourite destination for spa guests already from 19th century.

The most popular visitor was also a German poet Johann Wolfgang Goethe.
