Červená lhota chateau, former fortress, was constructed in the middle of the 14th century. The first written mention are from 1465.
The fortress was often renovated and changed a lot of owners. In 1946 it became state property and from 1949 has been open to the public.
The extraordinary building of the pilgrimage Church of St. Jan of Nepomuk originated thanks to the cooperation of the two important men – the abbot of the Žďár monastery, Václav Vejmluva, and the genius architect Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel. The impulse behind the construction of the church was the reveal of preserved tissue in the grave of Jan of Nepomuk in St. Vitus Cathedral in 1719. A legend says that the priest gave his life for keeping a confession secret of queen Žofie. The church has a plan of a five-pointed rose.
It is said that on a surface of the Vltava river, where Jan of Nepomuk drowned, a crown made of five stars appeared. This symbol appears also in lot of parts of the church. The area can be accessed by five entrances, in the temple there are five chapels with five altars. The church of Zelená hora has become one of the most visited pilgrimage site of the baroque era. However the object fell into disrepair and waited for reconstruction until the 1970’s and 1980’s. In 1994 the object was inscribed on the UNESCO Heritage List.
Ždár nad Sázavou chateau, the former monastery of the Cistercians.
You will visit the most interesting places connected with an extraordinary architect Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel. You will get to know the life of the Cistercian monks, you will enter the personal house of an abbot a prelature, you will visit the Basilica of the Assumption of Virgin Mary and St. Nicholas, you will visit the dormitories of the monks – a convent, you will see the well chapel and former hatcheries from the 13th century.
The Church of St. Jacob was built in the romanic architectural style and is located above the river Klejnárka, in the middle of a spacious square of village Jakub (nowadays part of Církvice). It was built in the 12th century and is one of a kind in the Czech Republic.
The church has a rectangular nave ended with apses and distinctly tall tower at the west end. The south side is the most remarkable, as it is richly decorated with romanic sculptures. This decoration is the biggest preserved set of romanic sculptures in the country.
In 1145, a man called Slavibor, from Švabenice, took part in raiding a party of the Bishop of Olomouc, Jindřich Zdík. The founding of the church was a way to remove the curse placed on him, and the person responsible for the beginning of the construction was Mary, widow after Slavibor. The first evidence of the church founding is from 1165, in a writing from Bishop Daniel I.
